About Allbirds

Allbirds was founded in San Francisco in 2016 by Tim Brown, a former New Zealand international footballer, and Joey Zwillinger, a biotech engineer. Brown's starting question was why a country with far more sheep than people was not making shoes out of wool. The Wool Runner was the answer and it is still the shoe the brand is known for.

The materials are the point. Merino wool for the Runners, eucalyptus tree fibre for the Tree line, sugarcane-based foam in the soles. The company publishes a carbon footprint on each product the way a food label lists calories, and it went public on Nasdaq in 2021.

Wool is a better hot-weather material than most people assume. Merino regulates temperature and resists odour, which is why the Wool Runners get worn without socks. That said, in Gulf summers the Tree line is the more sensible buy, because eucalyptus fibre breathes better than wool in high humidity.

The shoes are machine washable, which very few sneakers genuinely are. Remove the insoles, cold wash on a gentle cycle, air dry. That alone extends the life of a pair considerably.

Tips to save more

• Wash them rather than replacing them. Insoles out, cold gentle cycle, air dry away from direct sun. Most people throw away a pair that a wash would have saved.

• Sizing runs in whole sizes only. If you are normally a half size, the guidance is to go down rather than up, since the upper has some give.

• Skip socks with the Wool Runners, wear them with the Tree line. Merino handles bare feet. The tree fibre is smoother and slips more.
