About IZIL

IZIL Beauty is a Dubai natural beauty brand built on Moroccan ingredients. Mouna Abbassy founded it in 2012, starting with nine products marketed through a Facebook page, after moving to Dubai from Morocco and finding nothing on the shelves that matched what she had grown up with. The name came from her father, a native Berber speaker from the Atlas Mountains.

Argan oil is the ingredient the brand is built around, alongside rhassoul clay, rose water, prickly pear and green tea. The range covers skincare, haircare, body care and hammam rituals, and the products are formulated without parabens, sulphates or synthetic fragrance.

The argan supply chain runs through Berber women's cooperatives in rural Morocco. Argan oil is still extracted by hand, which is the reason it is expensive and the reason cheap argan oil on a marketplace is usually cut with something else.

IZIL grew from kiosks across the UAE between 2014 and 2016 into a standalone boutique and spa in The Dubai Mall, where it runs a traditional Moroccan hammam alongside the retail range. The products are developed and manufactured in the UAE.

Tips to save more

• Buy the pure argan oil in the larger size. It works on face, hair and cuticles, so a single bottle replaces three products and the per-millilitre cost drops sharply as the size goes up.

• The hammam sets are the better introduction than a single product. Black soap, a kessa glove and rhassoul clay work as a sequence, and buying one piece of it misses the point.

• Natural formulations have shorter shelf lives. Without synthetic preservatives, products expire faster. Check the period-after-opening symbol and do not stockpile.

• Use argan oil on damp hair, not dry. A few drops through towel-dried hair does more than a larger amount applied later, and it stops the greasy look people complain about.

• Prickly pear seed oil is the expensive one for a reason. It takes an enormous quantity of seeds to produce a small bottle, so treat it as a targeted treatment rather than a daily all-over oil.

• Book the hammam at the Dubai Mall spa if you are curious. Trying the ritual once tells you far more about which products you want than reading the descriptions will.
